Christmas Jumper Friday

Last week was national Christmas jumper day which I think is a fairly new thing as I certainly hadn't heard of it before!  A group of us decided to participate by wearing them to work and going to the pub afterwards looking like knobs!! It was really fun as there were loads of people in dodgy Christmas jumpers, most of which I recognised from Primark sadly enough!  I thought it was the perfect excuse to wear my new Disney jumper I had bought a few days earlier.  Now I know it's not strictly a 'Christmas jumper' - I got a lot of grief for that at work - however in my defense Lady and the Tramp is a classic Christmas movie (it's scheduled for Christmas Eve this year in fact so there) and also I was desperate to wear a Disney jumper to work and get away with it!!

Our nerdy Christmas group at work

These were the only two photos I could find where, although admittedly looking extremely pissed, my eyes are not closed or I am not on the verge of falling over.  What can I say it's that time of year where it is allowed to over-indulge in festivities!!  I am wearing my newish Topshop peplum top underneath which has the most gorgeous pearl embellishment on the collar, it adds a lovely touch to any plain outfit.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend.  I saw the Hobbit at the iMax last night which was incredible, review coming soon :) Just finished watching the Strictly Come Dancing final and am about to watch Taken 2 which I am pretty excited about as the first one is probably my favourite action film.  Also Liam Neeson is just scrumptious.

Work-wear Wednesday

Another Wednesday, another work-wear post.  Today it was our team Christmas lunch at work so I wanted to wear something a little more festive, hence the reddish peplum top and glitzy collar necklace.  The top is leaning very orange in the pictures but it is a bit more red in real life with a tinge of orange, it goes perfectly with the Mac lipstick Scarlet Ibis from the Marilyn collection which  I love wearing.  It is quite daring for day-time work mode but it never fails in perking me up and people have come to expect bright from me!!  We went to Thai Square which I have been to once before and is very enjoyable, they do good Thai food for reasonable prices.  They do not have a patch on Spicy Basil in Kilburn though - if you have not been there you MUST MUST - the food is amazing and the prices even better!!

I've got another Christmas lunch tomorrow and then drinks after work with friends, then the Hobbit at the iMax on Friday which I can't bloody wait for!! The festivities are in full swing! Hope everyone else is having an enjoyable festive week.

Disney Jumpers Alert!!

For those who don't know I am an absolute disney fanatic - I bloody love it.  I know this is ridiculous for someone of my age but what can I say I was raised on Disney, I had every disney film growing up and watched them continuously throughout my childhood. Combine that with my love for gorgeous, girly dresses and musicals and you have a pretty full blown obsession on your hands.  So when my friend this morning sent me a picture of Disney jumpers I was almost hyperventilating on the tube - there is Lady and The Tramp for christs sake! - and it is good old H&M that has made my Christmas wishes come true again.

The same thing happened last year when I heard whispers of Disney in H&M.  I ran into H&M and said to my boyfriend, hunt for anything Disney immediately!  I did the same in Forever 21 when those disney jumpers came out and never found anything so was not expecting to have any luck, however downstairs he found an absolute shrine to Disney topped with one of my favourite characters of all time - Bambi!! Once I had gotten over my excitement I picked up Minnie and Bambi and lived in them all last winter as seen here:

Now I do apologise for this post sounding like the ramblings of a toddler but I know many people who are also into Disney so here is the heads up - go to H&M immediately.  From what I can see there is Daisy Duck, Tigger and most importantly Lady and the Tramp.  I will definitely be buying the latter and might get one for my mum too as that is her favourite disney film.  Any of you as fanatical about disney as me?!

Raving about River Island

River Island is probably my favourite shop of this season.  I've only really started shopping there in the last year or so because before I found it slightly chav but in my opinion their stock has improved dramatically, to the extent I have ignored all self-restraint and picked up quite a few items recently.  Having said that these items were all in the sale or one of their 'seasonal offers' and were acquired over a period of two months so that has abated my guilt somewhat.  These will all be popping up on my blog in the near future in some form or another and I wore the boucle jacket for the first time a few weeks ago (as seen in my first 'work-wear Wednesday' post, which I loved.  It's a really useful way to brighten up a winter outfit as the neon trim is a lot more prominent in real life.
Post HERE:

orange fluorescent jumper £20.00
dogtooth skater dress £20.00
burgundy colour block peplum dress £15.00
navy colour block pencil dress £15.00
cream neon trim boucle jacket £15.00
black skater skirt £12.00
black pleated skater skirt £12.00
black polka dot tights £3.00
black dogtooth tights £3.00

Special mention has to go to the dogtooth skater dress as it is one of the longest, heaviest ones I have come across - no flimsy material here - and as such is perfect for taller people.  I'm going to do a dedicated post soon!  Also to the polka dot tights as I have an absolute obsession with polka dots, it's easily my favourite print and if I see it I have to pick it up - I think I need to seek help!!

Do you love River Island as much as I do?

Book Review: The House by The Sea

I am not really one to go into details of books in my reviews as I fear to give away any spoilers and I prefer reading other people's opinions as opposed to the storyline therefore I shall just start with the generic blurbs during my reviews as they probably explain it far better than I can anyway!

Ten-year-old Floriana is captivated by the beauty of the magnificent Tuscan villa just outside her small village, and dreams of living there someday. When Dante, the son of the villa's owner, invites her inside, she knows that her destiny is there, with him. But as they grow up they cross an unseen line, jeopardizing the very thing they hold most dear...Decades later and hundreds of miles away, a beautiful old country house hotel on England's Devon coast has fallen on hard times. Its owner, Marina, hires an artist-in-residence to stay the summer and teach the guests how to paint. The man she finds is charismatic and wise and begins to pacify the discord in her family and transform the fortunes of the hotel. However, it soon becomes clear that he is not who he seems...From the Italian countryside to the English coast, The House by the Sea is a moving and mysterious tale of love, forgiveness and the past revealed.

This is one of those books that left a warm feeling in my stomach and in a really happy mood!  It is not a particularly heavy read - on the front it says the perfect "holiday read" - I finished it in a few days however that is also because I could not put it down!  This is one of those books that just draws you in every time and makes journeys fly by - I found it incredibly easy to get ensconced in the stories of Floriana and Marina. It is a really lovely story but does have its fair share of darkness and drama, this is no 'chick lit' as you might think judging by the title and front cover of the book.  The strong overriding themes in this book are that of love, particularly what they describe as 'big love' in the book,  but mainly loss and in part resolution.  These are themes that are not only explored by the main characters but also crop up in the minor characters/plots of the book.

One of those books with two different stories: from different settings based in different times however you know there is a link between them and there is a nice correlation between the themes of the stories also - the issue of class takes an unexpected yet poignant role.  The trouble with these books is it can rather detach you from each story as by the time you are connecting with one part you jump to another.  However this was not the case here, I liked both stories equally and they both had their different characters and the story lines developed at a similar pace so that kept you glued to both sections and not wishing on or the other as often happens with me.  Of course the issue with these kind of books is that I always try to guess what the mystery is and how the two stories link together, because they always do, and yes I could not escape that here either - I spent most of the book trying to look for the clues and dupe the author out of their twist ending!  However I was pleasantly surprised that I missed a lot of the more subtle clues and actually did not guess until near the climax and the fact that you know you are progressing towards the big reveal keeps you hooked on reading even more!

One of the elements that added to the heart of this book was the attention paid to the minor characters/story lines.  I really enjoyed the peripheral characters and were invested in them much more than I usually am - especially in the Devon based parts.  Particular mention must go out to the older members of the story who I really loved!

In conclusion I would definitely recommend this book particularly if you enjoy your love stories with a little more depth and starkness than your normal 'holiday read'.  I found the theme of loss and learning how to cope/find resolution within yourself and life really interesting and relatable because everyone will have to deal with these feelings at one point or another.  If you are after a feel-good read with more adult themes and beautiful settings than this is the one for you.  I still feel all warm and fuzzy from devouring this but I'm sure a long day at work will put that to rights!!
